Boatbuilding has always fascinated me from the time that I was a boy. My early memories were of my uncle building a hydroplane in the mid-sixties. These stories were further enhanced by the ones of my grandfather who built an offshore boat with a cabin in the late fifties. From what spell the oral tradition cast over me a few things stood out.

I never saw a photo of either boat, but the images from the stories have never left my mind. It just amazed me as to why you would build something that you could simply buy, but at the same time I was intrigued as to why you would ever buy something that you could simply make.
