I
began building the Vagabond over Labor Day weekend by putting an addition
on my garage, which was 17' x 19'.
I
added an additonal 8' to the depth of the garage so that the strongback
(20') would have a minium clearance of 3' clearance on all sides.
Throughout
September and October, I built the strongback, plus the basket mold (stations
B,E & H) for the hull assembly.
Splice
building
1/2"
Meranti plywood - 10/5/01
Below is a photo of the splice with most of the weight removed from it.
A piece of plastic is placed over the splice, then a piece of plywood
is place over the top, followed by lots of weight. The plastic does a
nice job of keeping:
- airbubbles
out
- epoxy
ridges which means less sanding
- the extra
plywood from sticking to the splice

Cured
Splice
This
is a cureed splice with the plastic removed. The epoxy holds the plastic
wrap shape. What appears to be an airbuble is actually a depression of
about 1/16". It sanded smooth with very little effort.

Spliced
sheets
3 sheets of 4x8 1/2" Meranti spliced together for bottom panel.
